Employment Status
What employment status do court interpreters hold?
The Judiciary hires court interpreters on a freelance basis as independent contractors. They are self-employed and not considered Judiciary staff. Court interpreters, therefore, are not entitled to benefits provided to Judiciary employees, such as vacation and sick leave, retirement, Workers’ Compensation and unemployment insurance. In addition, court interpreters are responsible for filing any required federal or state forms and paying any applicable taxes or fees.
